Enyimba FC, one of the most successful clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), has officially parted ways with its head coach, Yemi Olanrewaju. The announcement was made on Saturday through the club’s social media channels, where they expressed gratitude for his time at the helm and wished him success in his future endeavors.
In their statement, the club confirmed the termination of Olanrewaju’s contract, stating:
“Enyimba FC can confirm that it has parted ways with head coach Yemi Olanrewaju. The club thanks Coach Olanrewaju for his services and wishes him the best in his future endeavors.”
The 32-year-old coach, who was appointed in May following the exit of Finidi George, leaves Enyimba at a difficult juncture. Under his stewardship, the club has endured a challenging run of form, going on a nine-match winless streak in all competitions. This includes six consecutive draws in the NPFL, which has severely impacted their league standing.
Olanrewaju’s tenure was also marked by disappointing results in the CAF Confederations Cup, where Enyimba finds itself at the bottom of Group D, with just one point from three matches.
The final blow came 48 hours after a frustrating 1-1 draw against Plateau United in the NPFL. Enyimba currently sits in 11th place on the league table, with 23 points from 15 games, far below the expectations of their loyal supporters.
During his time at the club, Olanrewaju oversaw 26 matches, securing nine victories and suffering seven defeats. Despite having previous experience as an assistant coach at clubs like Magate FC, MFM, and Vandrezzer, he was unable to turn the fortunes of Enyimba around, leaving the club in search of a new direction.
With the sacking of Olanrewaju, Enyimba will now look to find a new head coach who can restore the team’s competitive edge both in the NPFL and on the continental stage.
