The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially named Éric Sékou Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team. This decision was approved by the NFF Executive Committee following the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee.
Chelle, a former head coach of Mali’s national team, brings a wealth of experience to the Super Eagles. His appointment, announced on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, follows a meeting of the NFF’s Executive Committee in Abuja.

The 47-year-old Malian tactician boasts an impressive coaching résumé, having managed clubs like GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran. His tenure as Head Coach of Mali’s national team, beginning in 2022, saw significant achievements, including a strong run at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Mali nearly secured a semi-final spot but fell short after a dramatic 2-1 loss to eventual champions Côte d’Ivoire in extra time.
Chelle also had a distinguished playing career in France, representing clubs such as Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. He earned five caps for Mali during his time with the national team.
As the new Super Eagles coach, Chelle’s immediate priority is to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The next round of qualification matches (Matchdays 5 and 6) is scheduled for March 2025, presenting a crucial challenge for the team.
With his track record of success and extensive experience in both playing and coaching, Éric Chelle’s appointment brings renewed optimism to Nigerian football fans. All eyes will now be on him as he embarks on this exciting journey with the Super Eagles.
