Abbesi Akhamie is a talented New York-based writer, producer, and director with a mission to redefine how Africa is portrayed on the global stage. Her latest film, The Incredible Sensational Fiancée of Sèyí Àjàyí, has been creating waves, screening at prestigious festivals like the Toronto International Film Festival and the Africa International Film Festival in Lekki.
Born in Heidelberg, Germany, to a Nigerian father and a Black-American mother, Abbesi’s multicultural upbringing has shaped her creative voice. She holds a degree in Communications from George Mason University and is an MFA candidate at the New York University Graduate Film Program. Over the past five years, her short films have been featured at festivals worldwide, cementing her reputation as a filmmaker with a unique perspective.
A Homecoming Like No Other
Speaking about her recent visit to Nigeria for the screening of her new film, Abbesi described the experience as exhilarating. “It was amazing to screen the film and receive such positive reactions from one of my most important audiences—the Nigerian audience!” she shared. Audience members were particularly vocal about the film’s portrayal of the relationship dynamics between the characters Sèyí and Constance. “I’m Team Constance,” Abbesi quipped, highlighting the spirited debates the film sparked.
Investing in Nigeria
When asked about her confidence in investing in Nigeria amidst online criticism, Abbesi was optimistic. “Nigeria is full of opportunities, and I strongly believe in investing in our people and country. Like any investment, there are risks, but Nigeria’s resilience and history of success are undeniable.” Over the past decade, she has found great collaborators in Nigeria and looks forward to continuing her work in film and entrepreneurship.
Inspiration Behind The Incredible Sensational Fiancée of Sèyí Àjàyí
The film was born from Abbesi’s desire to celebrate African beauty and culture while exploring relationships from a comedic, female perspective. Originally conceived as a series about three women engaged to the same man, it evolved into a vibrant world set in the fictitious Pan-African community of Alkebulan. Drawing inspiration from the 1960s—an era of African independence and cultural renaissance—Abbesi crafted a visually stunning narrative influenced by photographers Seydou Keïta, Malick Sidibé, and Oye Diran.
Embracing African Culture
Despite her German and American upbringing, Abbesi remains deeply connected to her African roots. “From a young age, I understood that no matter where I go, I am Black, African, and female,” she explained. Returning to Nigeria as an adult reaffirmed her belief in the beauty and creativity of African design, which she feels is underrepresented in global cinema. “Africa is a largely untapped reservoir of creativity, and by showcasing our culture authentically, we can contribute to a more diverse and inclusive world.”
Reception and Future Plans
The film has been met with widespread praise. Abbesi shared a memorable moment when the audience joined in on Sèyí Àjàyí’s rap during a screening. “Ayoola Ayolola came up with the rap right before we shot the scene. It was so hard to keep a straight face!”
She is now developing a series adaptation of the film, promising more laughter and drama. In addition, she is working on two feature scripts and an ebook about sustainable filmmaking practices.
On Collaboration and Nollywood’s Growth
Abbesi believes collaboration between Hollywood and Nollywood is inevitable as global interest in African projects grows. However, she emphasizes the need for good partners, solid financing, and compelling stories. Reflecting on Nollywood, she applauded its rapid growth and stressed the importance of nurturing new talent and ensuring transparency in grant programs.
Mentorship and Teaching
As a former Head of Producing at EbonyLife Creative Academy, Abbesi has mentored over 60 students in creative and production management. Teaching, she says, has allowed her to give back to her community.
Shaping the Future Through Storytelling
Abbesi envisions a future where African stories stand tall on the global stage. “We can’t change the past, but we can shape the future by showcasing Africa’s beauty, power, and intelligence. By telling our stories authentically, we contribute to a diverse world where multiple narratives coexist.”
Relaxation and Inspiration
When not working, Abbesi enjoys catching up with friends over a good meal, often at her favorite Thai restaurant. For travel, Nice, France, holds a special place in her heart as it was the setting for her first beach experience.
Childhood Memories and Family Influence
Reflecting on her upbringing, Abbesi credits her mother for instilling discipline and her father for nurturing her pride in her identity. A cherished Christmas memory involves singing carols at a local hospital, an experience that remains close to her heart.
Looking Ahead
With The Incredible Fiancées of Sèyí Àjàyí series in development and other exciting projects on the horizon, Abbesi Akhamie continues to champion African stories, designs, and voices. Her work is a testament to the power of storytelling in creating a more inclusive and vibrant world.
