Tragedy in Ibadan: Stampede Claims 35 Lives, Police Arrest Ooni’s Ex-Wife

A heartbreaking stampede at a children’s funfair held at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, has claimed the lives of 35 children, with six others critically injured. The devastating incident, which occurred yesterday, has left families and the community in mourning.

Arrests and Ongoing Investigation

In a statement released on Thursday by Adewale Osifeso, the spokesperson for the Oyo State Police Command, it was confirmed that several individuals connected to the event have been arrested. Among them is Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, who was the main sponsor of the event. Others arrested include representatives from the media partner, Agidigbo FM, the principal of the school, and five additional organizers.

The event was organized by Wings Foundation in collaboration with Agidigbo FM. According to the police, the organizers failed to obtain proper permission or implement necessary safety measures, leading to the tragedy.

Condolences and Assurance of Justice

The Oyo State Police Command expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, assuring the public that a thorough investigation is underway to hold those responsible accountable.

“This tragedy could have been avoided. We are committed to ensuring justice for the victims and their families and to taking measures that will prevent a recurrence of such an incident,” the statement read.
