Accidental Discharge From Policeman Celebrating Promotion Kills Woman in Ekiti

A tragic incident occurred in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Thursday when a yet-to-be-identified police officer allegedly killed a young woman, Ifeoluwa Adekalu, during what was supposed to be a moment of celebration.

The officer, reportedly attached to another unit within the Ekiti State Police Command, was visiting the Okela Police Station when he received news of his promotion. Overcome with excitement, he allegedly fired celebratory shots into the air, but the bullets tragically struck Ifeoluwa, a mother of one.

Eyewitness accounts of the incident have been conflicting. Some say the victim was standing in front of a salon opposite the police station when she was hit, while others claim she had come to the station to visit her husband, who was in custody.

Ifeoluwa was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency care but sadly succumbed to her injuries.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for Ekiti State, Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the incident. He stated that the officer involved has been disarmed and is currently in detention pending further investigation.

This heartbreaking event serves as a somber reminder of the need for stricter control and discipline regarding firearm use within law enforcement. Our thoughts go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.
